Screening for oral cancer is performed as part of your oral hygiene check-up and dental exam. If anything suspicious is detected during your examination we will explain to you the risks of oral cancer and perform further tests.

The term 'Oral Cancer' includes cancerous growths in the cheeks, lips, mouth, throat, sinus, tongue, or anywhere in the oral cavity. As with most cancers, age is the primary risk factor for oral cancer, as most people diagnosed with a form of oral cancer are over 50 but in recent years the incidence of oral cancer on the younger population including teens has increase primarily due to the Human Papilloma Virus.
Other factors that contribute to increased risk of oral cancers include:
- Heavy use of alcohol
- Smoking or use of tobacco products
- Prolonged exposure to the sun's harmful rays (lip cancers)
- Family history of cancer
Oral Cancer Screening helps us detect cancer in its early stages. If found early, treatments for oral cancer have a high success rate.
At Haas dental we are pleased to incorporate Velscope into our oral examinations. This adjunctive technology helps us to find any abnormalities at the earliest possible stage. This quick and painless test is performed annually during your check-up visit.
Feel free to discuss oral cancer screening at Haas Dental Centre during your next visit.
