The "Root" of the Problem
When teeth are missing in a person's smile, the tooth root is also missing. Dental implants act as replacement tooth roots with an abutment that sits above the gum line on which a replacement tooth can be attached.
How Dental Implants Work
When the client's jawbone is healthy and sufficient, titanium implants can be placed directly into the jawbone. This type of "screw" implant is known as a root form implant. Sufficient time is allowed for the implant to fuse with the jawbone (osseointegration), and during this time, a replacement tooth is created in a laboratory that closely resembles the client's other teeth. The replacement tooth is later attached to the abutment to create a flawless, natural-looking smile.
Regardless of the type of dental implant used, the tooth anchors they provide are extremely strong, functional and comfortable. The waiting period between the time of the dental implant placement and the final replacement tooth attachment is typically 3-6 months. On certain occasions, an immediate temporary crown can be placed to eliminate the embarrassment of a missing front tooth.
